My 225th replica New York Newspapers series
This project started back in the Fall of 1999 when I decided to make a fake 18th Century Newspaper for the Brigade of the American Revolution Market Days event at the John Jay Homestead in New York.
My intention was to make something that people could read at the event which had actual news from the date of the reenactment. I was asked to include some items relevant to the activities portrayed at the Market Fair / Militia Muster and decided (only on the first one) to include the names of people I knew and advertising for people who were selling wares at the event.
I sold them for "two bits", although over them course of time I have often given them away to school kids at events if they ask "how much". I've also received some very generous unsolicited "donations" for a copy (even got 10 bucks from somebody for 4 copies once!)
My first paper took a few months to complete but once I discovered the goldmine of data included on Microfilm that could be copied and saw the outstanding reaction from both my fellow re-enactors and the general public I decided to make two a year for each year of the 225th anniversary of the American Revolution.
I also had hopes that perhaps teachers or re-enactors who might do school programming might be able to incorporate them into their curriculum, to which end after the first paper I decided to include only 100 percent real document-able copy from the papers.
Anyway below are the links to my first six papers in Adobe Acrobat format, if you try to print them out know that they are formatted for 11x 17 tabloid size paper, and the margins are about 1/4 inch (as are the originals).
ENJOY! Please don't reproduce these for sale, or bad karma will befall you. Also if the spirit moves you you can send a donation to the Pulaski Legion Banner fund at my address listed on the contact page (make checks payable to Scott Blake or Jim Sieradzki please)
